OSHA Hearing Conservation Program for Construction Workers Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a serious problem among construction workers, and the current OSHA regulations concerning construction noise exposure are not nearly as comprehensive or protective as those for general industry. Among the problems contractors face when complying with the current OSHA requirements are determining noise exposure levels from a complex combination of noise sources, the unpredictability of tasks and the short-lived nature of the work. CAOHC participated at an OSHA stakeholders meeting regarding the proposed 29 CFR Part 1926 hearing conservation program for construction workers on March 25, 2004 in Chicago, IL and July 21 in Herndon, VA . These meetings have had representation from company owners, unions, health-care providers, researchers, government agencies and organizations. CAOHC is encouraged by OSHA's demonstrated efforts to develop, and legislate, effective hearing conservation programs for the construction industry. Thousands of American construction workers are at risk from noise-related hearing loss. There are many issues yet to be resolved for this population. OSHA is still seeking input. Visit their site for more information and stay in contact with CAOHC Course Directors in your area re: their potential to support expansion of hearing conservation efforts to this population.
