1) ASSE INVITED TO JOIN CAOHC COUNCIL
2) NEW REPRESENTATIVES APPOINTED TO CAOHC COUNCIL

(Milwaukee, Wisconsin) - The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently joined the CAOHC Council as one of eight Component Professional Organizations (CPO) with representation on the Council.

Throughout its growth ASSE has dedicated itself to advancing the safety profession and enhancing the knowledge and capabilities of safety practitioners. In 1997-98 the Society was successful in impacting additional regulations promulgated by OSHA. Effective communication on governmental affairs issues is conducted via publication of monthly columns in Professional Safety Journal, the monthly National Legislative/ Regulatory update. Marcella Thompson, CSP, RN, COHN-S, represented ASSE at the October 17, 2002 Council meeting in Rosemont, IL. Thompson holds an MS (Occupational Health) from Harvard School of Public Health; MS (Occupational Health Nursing) Boston University; and a BS magna cum laude (Nursing) Salve Regina University. She has twenty years experience in occupational health and safety, and is currently principal safety engineer for ON Semiconductor Corporation, East Greenwich, RI with responsibility for the safety and health of over 500 employees.

John H. Elmore, MA MBA, will be the second representative for ASSE on the CAOHC Council. Mr. Elmore received his MA in Audiology from Northern Illinois University and his MBA from Oklahoma City University. He has over thirty-two years experience in hearing conservation and is the owner of Precision Hearing Conservation in Helotes, Texas. Mr. Elmore has been an active CAOHC Course Director since 1981 and served on the board of the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA). He is a Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) of the United States Air Force.

In addition, the following representative appointments on the CAOHC Council were announced at the October 17, 2002 meeting.

Peter M. Rabinowitz, MD MPH, was appointed as the representative for the American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), replacing Michael Holthouser, MD MPH. Dr. Rabinowitz is Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine, and is Director of Clinical Services at the Yale Occupational and Environmental Medicine Program, New Haven, CT. He completed post-doctoral fellowships in general preventive medicine and occupational medicine at Yale University School of Medicine, where he also received his Masters of Public Health (MPH). Dr. Rabinowitz was the recipient of a NIOSH/NIH Special Emphasis Research Career Award (SERCA) in 1998, and is currently the Principal Investigator on a NIOSH-funded research grant to investigate the role of solvent exposures in hearing loss. Dr. Rabinowitz has served as a medical consultant to Alcoa and is the Associate Chair of ACOEM's Scientific Committee on Noise and Hearing Loss.
Mary M. McDaniel, MS CCC-A, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) replaces Myrna Stephens, PhD. Ms. McDaniel received
her BS in Speech Pathology & Audiology from North Dakota State University and her MS in Audiology from Minot State University. She is the founder and owner of Pacific Hearing Conservation, Inc., in Seattle, WA., a consulting firm providing hearing conservation services for industry. She has been a certified CAOHC Course Director since 1992, and is a past-president of NHCA and a contributing author to the Spectrum, an NHCA publication.

The Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) is an organization dedicated to the establishment and maintenance of training standards for those who safeguard hearing in the workplace. CAOHC has been a leader in providing standards for occupational hearing conservation programs since its inception in 1973. Currently there are over 21,000 CAOHC certified occupational hearing conservationists trained through CAOHC Course Directors to protect the hearing health of workers in industry and mining.
