What is a CAOHC Course Director?

The Course Director (CD) is the individual responsible for planning and conducting training courses for Occupational Hearing Conservationists (OHCs). The CD is responsible for ensuring that specific CAOHC guidelines are followed and for determining the qualifications and competence of participating faculty members. The CD also determines the OHC course attendee's successful completion of the course and eligibility for CAOHC certification as an OHC.

Application:
Applicants for CAOHC certification as Course Directors must meet educational, professional, credential/licensing and hearing conservation experience requirements (described below, in "How to Apply - Certification"). Those seeking recertification must hold a professional credential/license (see "How to Apply - Recertification").

Workshop Description:
CAOHC conducts two annual workshops for certification and recertification of Course Directors. These workshops consist of eight hours of focused training and an exam intended to prepare CDs for successful preparation and conduct of the 20-hour OHC certification and 8-hour recertification courses. Course Director certification and recertification is granted for a five-year period. After completing this training, attendees will be able to:

  1. Develop course curricula that meet CAOHC's current requirements for Occupational Hearing Conservationist (OHC) certification and recertification courses.
  2. Successfully accomplish procedural actions required by CAOHC of a Course Director (CD) before, during and after CAOHC-approved OHC courses.
  3. Implement contemporary and motivational teaching techniques and available resources (including those provided by CAOHC) for effective hearing conservation training.
  4. Recognize how recent changes in federal hearing conservation regulations influence the conduct of CAOHC-approved OHC courses.
  5. Prepare instructional materials that incorporate recent scientific and technical advances in hearing conservation for use in training conducted by CDs and OHCs.

Attendees will receive continuing education credits, a copy of the Hearing Conservation Manual Second Printing 4th Edition (with valuable ANSI and OSHA standards), and unique training materials.

Certification:
Individuals completing all of these requirements will be certified for five years. This certification will confirm your role as a Course Director for the training of Occupational Hearing Conservationists in audiometric issues, hearing conservation standards and regulations, recordkeeping, along with selection, fitting and use of hearing protection so that they may become CAOHC certified and be a contributing member of the occupational hearing conservation team.
